Today’s dentures are a huge improvement over the ones of past decades. They are modern, look great, and are fitted to feel comfortable. To learn more about dentures and how they can benefit how you live, here is a compiled list of frequently asked questions.

Dentures are a removable replacement for missing teeth typically made of an acrylic resin. Dentures are designed to look as close to your natural teeth as possible and are a great way to improve your smile, ability to eat and speak, and your overall oral health. No matter if you need a few teeth replaced or your entire jawline, dentures are an excellent option for many different kinds of people, enhancing your quality of life significantly.

If you feel that your smile, ability to speak or eat, or facial support is compromised, you are most likely a great candidate for dentures. Dentures are a great resource for those with missing teeth – no matter if you are missing a few or your entire grin. Schedule an appointment with Nevada Sun Dental today to see how we can help you find the perfect solution for your smile.

There are two main types of dentures:

  • Partial dentures are typically attached to the teeth via metal clasps or precision attachments, making them removable to take out as desired. Though precision attachments are more aesthetically pleasing, metal clasps tend to be more affordable. No matter the type of partial denture you decide on, the benefits will improve vital aspects of your life.
  • Complete dentures are for those with all, or mostly all, of their teeth missing. With them, you can replace your entire upper jaw, lower jaw, or both. The two most common types of complete dentures are immediate and conventional. Immediate dentures are measured for during a preliminary visit and are then placed in the mouth immediately upon the extraction of any remaining teeth. One of the biggest pros of immediate dentures is that you do not have to wait for your mouth to heal to get your dentures placed, whereas with conventional dentures the tissue must be healed. However, since bones and gums can shrink and move over time, immediate dentures may need to be realigned, rebased, or replaced to maintain a perfect fit.

To get the perfect fit for your smile, there are a series of appointments over a relatively short period―one for an impression, a wax bite, and a ‘try -in’ where the matched color, shape, and fit for your teeth are thoroughly analyzed. After all of the required measurements are taken, the specs are sent to the dental lab where a sample wax model of your custom dentures will be made to try for potential revisions and adjustments. Once completed dentures are received, they are tried on to ensure the proper fit, and supplied with the appropriate care tools.<

Do not worry if your dentures feel awkward in the beginning. They typically take a few weeks to get used to once you have received your completed customized set. Though they may feel a bit bulky at first, your dentures should be placed easily in your mouth. If you feel like you need to be forceful when putting them in, visit Nevada Sun Dental to adjust them for proper comfort.

To get used to your dentures, you should try and wear them as often as possible as it is the quickest way to see if any adjustments are needed for better comfort. In addition to identifying adjustment points, you will also want to start out eating soft, easy to eat foods, slowly building up to eating as you normally would. However, it is still suggested to avoid hard or sticky foods, like hard candy and gum, once you have grown accustomed to your dentures. Though dentures do take a little while to get used to, once they feel comfortable they will make eating, smiling, and speaking much easier!

Many people are overwhelmed at the prospect of taking care of their dentures; however, it is not much different than taking care of natural teeth. In addition to continuing to care for your gums, tongue, and palette by brushing with a toothbrush and toothpaste, you will need to clean your dentures with a denture brush and denture cleanser approved by the American Dental Association (ADA).

Removing plaque, food deposits, and other buildup is key to keeping dentures looking great, preventing any lasting stains from forming. You will also want to keep your dentures moist overnight by placing them in a soaking solution or water. To make sure that your dentures maintain their proper fit, seek constant adjustment check-ups as improperly fitting dentures can break, crack, and chip.
